In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “saber” and “conhecer”.
I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Saber
Eu sei tocar piano. // I know how to play the piano.
Eu sei o horário do restaurante. // I know the restaurant’s timetable.
Conhecer
Eu conheço aquele homem. // I know that man.
Eu quero conhecê-lo melhor. // I want to get to know him better.
Eu não conheço Paris. // I don’t know Paris.
Conheces o novo restaurante em Lisboa? // Do you know the new restaurant in Lisbon?

— Conheces Lisboa? // Do you know Lisbon?
— Não, nunca lá fui. Mas sei que tem vistas muito bonitas sobre o rio. // No, I never went there. But I know that it has beautiful views over the river.
— Sim, é verdade. Eu já lá fui mais de dez vezes e conheço bem a cidade. Também foi lá que conheci a Angela Merkel. // Yes, it's true. I've been there more than ten times and I know the city well. It was also there that I met Angela Merkel.
— Conheceste-a? A sério? // Did you meet her? Seriously?
— Sabes quem é? // Do you know who that is?
— Claro que sei! A cantora. Eu não estive a viver numa gruta estes anos todos, sabes? // Of course, I do! The singer. I haven’t been living in a cave all these years, you know?
— Uh? Sim, pois... Sentou-se ao meu lado no café um dia e começámos a falar. Eu sei falar alemão muito bem por isso tornámo-nos bons amigos. // Uh? Yes, right... She sat next to me at the cafe one day and we started talking. I can speak German very well so we became good friends.
— Uau. Impressionante. Eu não sabia que ela gostava de visitar Portugal. // Wow. Impressive. I didn’t know that she liked to visit Portugal.
— Mas e tu? Deixa-me conhecer-te melhor. É a primeira vez que vens a Paris? // But what about you? Let me get to know you better. Is this your first time in Paris?
— Eu moro aqui. // I live here.
— Ah, que interessante! Não sabia. Por isso é que sabes falar tão bem francês. // Ah, how interesting! I didn’t know. That’s why you can speak French so well.
— Evidentemente. // Evidently.
— Sabes que eu também sou um bocadinho conhecido. // You know that I’m also a little bit famous.
— Ai, sim? Eu não sei quem és. // Oh, really? I don’t know who you are.
— O meu nome é Bond. James Bond. // My name is Bond. James Bond.
— Nunca ouvi falar. // I’ve never heard of you.
