In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “algum” and “qualquer”.
I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Examples
Algum vs. qualquer
Preciso de alguma coisa para beber. // I need something to drink (as opposed to nothing - I am thirsty so I want something to drink).
Preciso de beber qualquer coisa. // I need something to drink (anything will do, I don’t care what it is. It can be water, juice, wine, etc.)
Tenho algumas moedas na carteira. // I have a few coins in my wallet.
Posso ver qualquer filme. // I can watch any movie. (I don’t care which. I am focusing on the fact that any of the options is a possibility.)
Queres fazer alguma coisa no fim de semana? // Do you want to do something on the weekend? (I don’t want to stay home.)
Queres fazer qualquer coisa no fim de semana? // Do you want to do something on the weekend? (It doesn’t matter what. We can go to the theater, to the beach, etc.)

— Tens algum livro para eu ler nas férias? // Do you have any book for me to read on vacation?
— Tenho vários. Tens preferência? // I have several. Do you have a preference?
— Não, pode ser qualquer um. Eu não sou esquisito. // No, any will do. I am not picky.
— Ok. Tenho aqui um da Agatha Christie. // Ok. I have one from Agatha Christie here.
— Ah, não por favor. Tudo menos isso. Tens algum livro de Camões? // Oh, no, please. Anything (everything) but that. Do you have any book by Camões?
— Queres ler um livro de Camões nas férias? É suposto descansares. E não, não tenho. Queres um livro de Tolkien. Eu acho que tu gostas de fantasia. // You want to read a book by Camões on vacation? You're supposed to rest. And no, I don't. Do you want a book by Tolkien? I think you like fantasy.
— Sim, é verdade. Tens alguma obra da Guerra dos Tronos? // Yes, that’s true. Do you have any Game of Thrones’ work?
— Não, por acaso não. Mas tenho alguns contos de terror de Lovecraft. Mas não sei se gostas. // No, as a matter of fact, I don’t. But I have some horror tales from Lovecraft. But I don’t know if you like it.
— Pode ser qualquer coisa! Eu não sou esquisito. Mas terror não é muito a minha coisa. // It can be anything! I am not picky. But horror is not really my thing.
— Bom. Também tenho algumas revistas com jogos. Se calhar preferes alguma coisa que exija mais atividade mental. // Well. I also have some magazines with games. Maybe you prefer something that requires more mental activity.
— Hmm. Qualquer pessoa pode fazer isso. Na verdade queria qualquer coisa/alguma coisa mais divertida. Tens algum livro de Agatha Christie? // Hmm. Anyone can do that. I actually wanted something more fun. Do you have any book by Agatha Christie?
