In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “conseguir” and “poder”.
I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Poder
Eu não posso ir à praia, tenho de trabalhar. // I can’t go to the beach, I have to work. (I don’t have the opportunity to go to the beach).
Eu não posso esperar por ti porque o meu autocarro sai daqui a cinco minutos. // I can’t wait for you because my bus leaves in five minutes.
Não se pode fumar no escritório. // One can’t smoke in the office (it’s not allowed).
Eu posso abrir esta porta porque tenho um cartão de acesso. // I can open this door because I have an access card (I’m permitted to open this door, someone allowed me to open this door).
Conseguir
Eu não consigo perceber esta regra gramatical. // I can’t understand this grammar rule.
Eu não consigo abrir a porta. // I can’t open the door (it’s not physically possible for me).
Conseguiste chegar a tempo? // Did you manage to arrive on time?

— Vais à festa? // Are you going to the party?
— Sim, o meu pai deixou, por isso posso ir. // Yes, my father let me, so I can go.
— E vais levar carro? // And will you take a car?
— Só tenho o carro do meu pai e ele não me deixa usá-lo. Não o posso levar. // I only have my dad's car, and he won't let me use it. I can't take it.
— Bom, então temos de ir a pé. Podemos ir pela floresta. // Well, then we have to go on foot. We can go through the forest.
— Pela floresta. À noite? Podemos ser assaltados. // Through the forest. At night? We can be robbed.
— Mas é verão e ainda está de dia a essa hora. Não há problema. // But it's summer and it's still daylight at that hour. No problem.
— Mas fiz uma operação ao joelho. Não sei se consigo subir o monte até ao outro lado. Vou ficar com muitas dores. // But I had knee surgery. I don't know if I can climb the hill to the other side. I'm going to be in a lot of pain.
— Então, temos um problema. Eu também não te consigo levar às costas! // Then, we have a problem. I also can't carry you on my back!
— Pois. Eu quero ir à festa, mas acho que afinal não consigo ir. Já esgotei todas as hipóteses. // Right. I want to go to the party, but I think I can't go after all. I've exhausted all the possibilities.
— E o teu pai não nos pode levar lá? // And can't your father take us there?
— Não sei, mas vou telefonar-lhe. // I don't know, but I'm going to call him.

— Sim? Quem fala? // Yes? Who is this?
— Sim? Não consigo perceber nada! // Yes? I can't understand anything!
