In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “bem” and “bom”.
I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Bem
Ele dança muito bem. // He dances very well.
Eu não sei cozinhar muito bem. // I don’t know how to cook very well.
Bom
O dia foi muito bom. // The day was very good.
A cantora é muito boa. // The singer is very good.
As maçãs são boas. // The apples are good.
Os teus vizinhos são bons vizinhos. // Your neighbors are good neighbors.

— Hmm. Este bolo é tão bom! // Hmm. This cake is so good!
— Também quero um bocadinho. // I also want a little.
— Não és alérgico ao chocolate? // Aren’t you allergic to chocolate?
— Uh? Eu não sou alérgica a nada. // Uh? I’m not allergic to anything.
— É que se és alérgica isto não te vai fazer bem. // It’s just that if you're allergic to this, it won’t do you any good.
— Já disse que não sou alérgica. Dá cá uma fatia. // I told you, I’m not allergic. Give me a slice.
— Bem/bom, também tem morangos. Eu ouvi dizer que não podias comer morangos. // Well, it also has strawberries. I heard that you couldn’t eat strawberries.
— Quem é que te disse esse disparate? Esses morangos têm mesmo bom aspeto. // Who told you that nonsense? Those strawberries really look good.
— A Ana faz sempre boas confeções. Fez este bolo ontem à noite. É mesmo fresquinho. // Ana always makes good confections. She baked this cake last night. It’s really fresh.
— Sim, ela cozinha mesmo bem. Espera lá. Esse é o bolo que caiu ao chão ontem? A Ana disse-me que tinha feito um bolo, mas que não se podia comer. O cão já estava a lambê-lo quando ela voltou a entrar na cozinha. // Yes, she cooks really well. Wait a minute. Is that the cake that fell on the floor yesterday? Ana told me that she had baked a cake, but that one couldn’t eat it. The dog was already licking it when she went back into the kitchen.
— Uh? Este bolo? Cof cof. // Uh? This cake? Cough cough.
— Acho que sim. É melhor não comeres. Dá cá. Ela há de fazer mais bolos bons no futuro. // I think so. You better not eat it. Give it to me. She will eventually bake more good cakes in the future.
