In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “conduzir” and “dirigir”.
I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Examples
Conduzir
Eu sei conduzir muito bem. // I know how to drive very well.
Ele está a aprender a conduzir camiões. // He is learning how to drive trucks.
What if I want to say: I drove home. Would we use the verb conduzir? Not really. This is one of those cases where the English doesn’t translate to Portuguese with the same verb. We would say:
Fui de carro para casa. // I went home by car.
Dirigir
Ele dirige uma empresa de 500 pessoas. // He runs a company of 500 people.
O investigador dirige a investigação. // The investigator leads the investigation.
O maestro dirigiu a orquestra. // The conductor directed the orchestra.
Dialogue transcript
— Olha, conduz mais devagar porque está a começar a nevar. // Look, drive slower because it's starting to snow.
— Estás com medo? Eu sei conduzir muito bem. Eu tenho um dom natural. // Are you afraid? I know how to drive very well. I am a natural.
— Ahh. Não, não tenho medo. Achas? Eu só quero chegar ao concerto inteiro. // Ahh. No, I'm not afraid. Do you think? I just want to get to the concert in one piece.
— Também não faz mal se chegares um bocadinho abalado. // (But) it doesn't matter if you arrive a little shaken.
— Claro que faz mal. Eu sou o maestro. Se eu não estiver bem quem é que dirige a orquestra? // Of course it’s a problem. I am the conductor. If I am not well, who directs the orchestra?
— Não é o Carlos que está a dirigir toda a logística? Ele que trate disso. Ou então eu vou um bocadinho mais depressa! // Isn't it Carlos who is running all the logistics? Let him handle it. Or I'll go a little faster!
— Não, não. Os músicos já sabem o que têm de fazer. Não é grave. Olha, eu também sei conduzir. Se quiseres, eu posso conduzir um bocado. // No, no. The musicians already know what they have to do. It’s not serious. Look, I also know how to drive. If you want, I can drive for a while.
— Deixa-me lá fazer o que eu faço melhor. // Let me do what I do best.
— Mas, tu tens carta de condução? // But, do you have a driver's license?
— Uh? Quem é que precisa disso quando já se tem anos de experiência em carrinhos de choque? // Uh? Who needs that when one already has years of experience in bumper cars?
