In this episode, I’m talking about the disappearing letters of European Portuguese. This is when the Portuguese omit some letters in certain circumstances when speaking fast. Notice that this only happens in very informal situations.

Pa que é que queres isto? Why do you want this?

Como é que calculas isto? How do you calculate this?
Onde é que caiu a bola? Where did the ball fall?
O que é que queres comer? What do you want to eat?
quero + consonant > qué
Qué ver isso. I want to see that.
Qué comer o bolo. I want to eat the cake.
Quero ir ao cinema. I want to go to the movies.

Qués mais arroz? Do you want more rice?
O que é que qués fazer? What do you want to do?
Não qués este livro? Don’t you want this book?

Não vais à praia po causa da chuva? Aren't you going to the beach because of the rain?
Este biscoito é pó cão. (po + o = pó) This biscuit is for the dog.
com um, com uma > cum, cuma
Qués um café cum pouco de leite? Do you want coffee with a little milk?
Fui ao café cuma amiga. I went to the coffee shop with a friend.
com o(s), com a(s) > co(s), ca(s)
Ele fala cos amigos. He speaks with his friends (the friends).
Vais ca tua amiga? Are you going with your friend?

Trazia-me um café, sachavor? Would you bring me a coffee, please?
