Imaginem um café num bairro típico em Lisboa.
Imagine a coffee shop in a typical neighborhood in Lisbon.
Here is the dialogue:
Empregado: Bom dia senhora (sora) Filomena, como está?
Good morning Ms. Filomena, how are you?
Cliente: Bem, obrigada, e o senhor?
Well, thank you, and you?
Empregado: Também, também. Então o que é que vai ser?
Also, also. So, what is it going to be?
Cliente: É o costume, se faz favor.
It’s the usual, please.
Empregado: Uma bica e um pastel de nata?
An espresso and an egg tart.
Cliente: Sim... olhe, não, desculpe lá. Traga-me antes meia torrada com pouca manteiga.
Yes... look, no, excuse me. Bring me a half-toast with little butter instead. (lá: emphatic)
Empregado: E o cafezinho?
And the coffee? (cafezinho: diminutive, little coffee)
Cliente: Sim, mas com adoçante, se faz favor. Estou de dieta.

Empregado: Trago já.

Cliente: Eu pedi com pouca manteiga. Esta torrada está a nadar em manteiga.

Empregado: Eh pá, tem toda a razão. Trago-lhe já outra.
You are completely right. I’ll bring you another right away. (eh pá: emphatic interjection)

Empregado: Júlia, então eu não te disse que a torrada era com pouca manteiga, pá?
Júlia, didn’t I tell you the toast was with little butter. (pá: informal vocative)
Empregada na cozinha: Se tivesses gritado assim tão alto tinha ouvido.
If you had yelled as loud as that I would have heard.
Empregado: Pronto, faz-me lá isso então.
Ok, do that then. (pronto: interjection that expresses there is nothing left to add or do / lá: emphatic)

Empregado: Aqui tem. E um chocolatinho, que é oferta da casa.
Here you go. And a little chocolate, on the house. (that is offer of the house) (chocolatinho: diminutive chocolate)
Cliente: Ó senhor João, mas então eu estou de dieta.
Mr. João, but I am on a diet. (ó + name: informal vocative)
Empregado: Então, ofereça ao seu marido!
So, give it to your husband!
Cliente: Obrigada, não era necessário...
Thank you, it wasn’t necessary.
Olhe, já agora, embrulhe-me aí dois rissóis de camarão, dois croquetes e dois pastéis de bacalhau para levar.
Look, by the way, wrap me... to take away. (aí: emphatic)
Empregado: Estamos sem rissóis de camarão.
We are out of shrimp rissoles.
Cliente: Não me diga!
You don’t say!
Empregado: Não quer umas chamuçazinhas?
Don’t you want some samosas? (chamuçazinha: diminutive chamuça).
Cliente: Ai não, é muito picante. Então e empadas, tem?
No, that’s too spicy. And pies, do you have (some)? (ai: expresses surprise, joy, pain or displeasure)

Cliente: Então são duas também. E faça-me a continha se faz favor.

Empregado: Ora bem, bica sessenta cêntimos (0,60€), meia-torrada noventa cêntimos (0,90€), os salgadinhos, dá sete e oitenta (7,80€). Isto faz um total de nove euros e trinta (9,30€). Aqui tem.
Well, espresso sixty cents, half-toast ninety cents, salty snacks/bites (like croquete, rissol, etc), that makes seven euros and eighty cents. This makes a total of nine euros thirty. Here you go.
Empregado: Obrigado e resto de um bom dia.
